Inspired and affected by years of watching programs such as Comic Relief I have decided to do some volunteer work in South Africa. I am not able to make a huge monetary contribution to any of the Charities that are doing the great work in South Africa but I am able to give my time. I am willing, able and enthusiastic about helping the local communities first hand and hope to make a real difference to their lives.
As a Community Volunteer in Cape Town I can provide children, youths and adults with care, skills and support that will hopefully prevent them from falling into Africa's poverty trap.
"The formative years of a child are the foundation upon which his or her life is built. At this (Journey Hope) pre-school, teachers stimulate children to reach their full potential physically, emotionally, psychologically, intellectually and spiritually. As a result of socio-economic problems, many children are chronically under developed in these five crucial areas. Later in life, some children from deprived backgrounds either end up on the streets, involved with drugs, or just unable to function as part of society. By providing Early Childhood Development, these potential problems can be reduced or avoided, and the cycle of poverty broken." (Quote from Twin Volunteer)
My time as a volunteer may be spent either teaching at one of the many local schools, caring for those suffering from HIV/AIDS, working on after school projects to keep children off the streets or caring for the oprhans of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. I am told it is best to go with an open mind so that I can be placed where my skills would be most beneficial to the community. But I hope to use my creative background of Art and Drama to build bridges and form trust with the children I meet and work with.
